"Epicure" review
Norway is a long way from Winnipeg. But it makes perfect sense that this
co-ed quartet's second album is on Winnipeg's own endearing records. Their
passive-aggressive noise-pop ‹ think Breeders meets Sonic Youth ‹ would be
right at home on the Albert stage most nights of the week. Lead singer and
bassist Katy Penny has one of those breathy, soothingly deadpan voices that
reminds you of Kim Gordon or one of the Deal sisters on a rainy day.
Meanwhile, the band strikes a fine balance between straightahead pop melody
and avant dissonance, cranking out churning, swirling sheets of white noise
to cover the feather-bed sweetness. They¹ve made their bed ‹ and it's so
inviting you can't help but want to lie in it.
